Mrs Geraldine Ssali Busuulwa, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) deputy Managing director has lost her job.In a tactical dismissal, Finance minister Matia Kasaija refused to renew her contract, instead appointing Mr Patrick Ayota to her position. Ayota has been the Fund’s chief finance officer for the last six years.

According to Ms Barbra Arimi, head of Marketing at NSSF, “The Minister has declined to renew the contract of Mrs Geraldine Ssali Busuulwa, the Fund’s Deputy Managing Director, as per Section 40 of the NSSF Act. She exits employment with the Fund effective 29th October 2017”.

Ms Ssali was reportedly fired for a “less-than-satisfactory performance.”  The decision not to renew her contract was made by the board of the Fund.
Minister Kasaija also renewed the contract of Managing Director Richard Byarugaba for an extended five years.

Ms Ssali has had turbulent times at NSSF. She has been variously accused of insurbodination and failing to cooperate with her boss, Richard Byarugaba. She was at one time suspended, and she ran to the high court which overruled the suspension. She then petitioned the minister who instead followed the decision of the board.

In 2016, attempts to suspend Ssali were blocked by high court Judge Stephen Musota who ruled that, “sending of Ssali on forced leave when she had completed her leave days raises suspicion and must be investigated.”
