Chris Obore, the Director of Public and Corporate Affairs at Parliament says the August House has not yet received the refund of the age-limit cash made by MP Kyagulanyi Sentamu. Sentamu also known as Bobi Wine, made a highly publicized refund of the cash by posting records of his instructions to Barclays Bank Uganda to remit the money back to Parliament.

Obore says that seven MPs who said they would refund the money had done so. The eighth was Bobi Wine but his money had not yet been received by the time we published this story.

Those who refunded the money include Moses Kasibante (Rubaga North), Medard Segona (Busiro East), William Nzoghu (Busongora North), and Mathias Mpuuga (Masaka Municipality). Others include Muwanga Kivumbi (Butambala), Soroti Woman MP Angeline Osegge and Ibrahim Semujju Nganda (Kira Municipality).

Chris Obore explained that there was no problem with MPs refunding the money. “It is their right to do so. We shall return the money to the Consolidated Fund,” Obore said.

Several MPs had objected to the cash claiming that it was meant to influence their decision on the age-limit bill. Obore however said that this was the speaker’s initiative to ensure that this bill becomes informed by public opinion as opposed to the views of members of parliament.
