The Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission Dr.Tanga Odoi provoked laughter within the parliamentary committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, when he said that if President Yoweri Museveni left, he would have no job.

Odoi was appearing on Thursday November 16, to make a presentation on the age-limit constitutional amendment.

“I am not ready to lose my job as Chairman, NRM electoral commission – because I have no other job. So why should he [President Museveni]) lose his? [If he is to lose it] let him lose it through the ballot paper,” Tanga Odoi said.

He also said that Museveni understood the military, so he would be in best position to manage it, having been part of its foundation. Odoi, a prominent historian linked Museveni to NRM’s longevity. He delinked Uganda from Zimbabwe saying, Museveni understood the military very well and so was bound to control them against overthrowing him.

Odoi also said, “Museveni is the surest way of NRM to retain power,” which elicited mixed responses from the committee.

The Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, is seeking views from different people on the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 13 of 2017, which seeks to among others amend the constitution to remove age-limit.
