KABAROLE — Elders in the Tooro sub-region under their association Isaazi ly’Abaantu Bakuru Ba Tooro have denounced attempts to amend Article 102 (b) of the Constitution a process that would delete the presidential age limit from the constitution. The elders called on the proponents of the amendment to abandon it.

The Tooro elders released a statement dated October 10 in which they say Members of Parliament should instead focus on pressing issues facing Uganda. They attacked the age-limit campaign as a “luxurious” amendment accompanied by the land law. The elders accuse “selfish individuals” of being behind the amendment.

ly’Abaantu Bakuru Ba Tooro warn about the consequences of the amendment which they argue would cause violence and instability in the country.

The Elders of Tooro join other elderly voices like former prime minister Professor Apollo Nsibambi, Justice Ogoola and Justice Samuel Waako Wambuzi who have voiced similar concerns about the amendment.

The bill to amend Article 102 (b) of the constitution has been tabled in parliament and is now before the Parliamentary and Legal Affairs committee where it shall be scrutinized.

Several MPs have opposed the amendment with the climax of their opposition being a fist fight in parliament, with those in support of the bill.
