NRM officials submit 5M signatures to the EC for Museveni

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has submitted 5 million signatures in support of President Yoweri Museveni’s nomination at the Electoral Commission. NRM’s hefty pack of endorsements collected nationwide has raised eyebrows in the opposition.

Semujju Ibrahim Nganda, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) spokesperson says that the move was in contravention of electoral laws that require only a certain number of signatures.

“NRM should stick to the rules. It wants to show that the president has support, but that is not what the law says. The law is clear on the number of signatures required,” the Kira Municipality MP adds.

NRM spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa said that the party was overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to extend their signatures.

“We were overwhelmed. 12 million people wanted to give us affidavits but we had to stop at 5 million. The Electoral Commission can select from those.”

As the country moves to the next polls, the jostling to show party strength has started.
