INTERVIEW: It was all about falling in love with someone special – Ray G opens up on Omusheshe song

Ray G, real names Reagan Muhairwe is arguably the best export from Western Uganda to the contemporary Ugandan music scene. With his melodious voice that knits Runyankole in R ‘n’ B, Afrobeat, and Reggae, he has released hit after hit.

Ray G at the tender age of 27, boasts of over 40 songs and has been in the music business for over six years now.

With his hit song with Spice Diana rocking the airwaves of Ugandan music lovers, Ray G put up an electrifying performance at his concert about two weeks ago.

He proved his worth in the Luganda-dominated music industry when he staged his Ray G Live in Concert at Agip Motel, Mbarara.

We spoke to him about his music and life and the full interview is below

Monday Times Uganda: Ray G seems to be a name for your music career, what are your real names?

Ray G – Way back at high school, guys used to call me Ray because of my name Reagan so I decided to capitalize on that to make it my official stage name.

Monday Times Uganda: For how long have you been professionally singing?

Ray G – I have been in the music business for six years

Monday Times Uganda: How many songs do you have so far?

Ray G – I have about 43 songs

Monday Times Uganda: What has been your biggest hit since you started singing?

Ray G – I can’t tell one because I believe all my songs are hits but to be precise, I feel like Owangye Omwigarire, Mureebe among others.

Monday Times Uganda: Who inspired you to sing, which artistes did you look up to?

Ray G – The late Mowzey Radio

Monday Times Uganda: How do you come up with your songs?

Ray G – I write my own music. I come up with anything I like.

Monday Times Uganda: We are told that you only sing in languages from western Uganda, is that true?

Ray G – I do languages that I can speak, not only Western Uganda languages but as long as I can speak the language, I can sing it.

Monday Times Uganda: What would you say have been your biggest challenges since you started singing?

Ray G – I only saw challenges when I was just starting music but now I turned the challenges into opportunities. The language first of all wasn’t an easy thing but I managed finally

Monday Times Uganda: How did you come to record your hit ‘Omusheshe’ with Spice Diana?

Ray G – Her manager and I are very close friends, so one day we had a gig in Kampala and decided to come up with something.

So I wrote my part then Yese Oman Rafiki wrote the luganda part for Spice and the song came up.

Monday Times Uganda: What were you singing about in ‘Omusheshe’?

Ray G – The song was all about falling in love with someone who is special and also from a different tribe.

Monday Times Uganda: What advice do you give anyone who is starting music today?

Ray G – To be the real you. Sing in the language you know very well, be yourself and be original. Never attempt to do anything that you can’t manage.

Monday Times Uganda: What plans do you have for your career, for the next five years?

Ray G – I want to take it to another level like to the East African artiste or even Africa.
