Nakumatt shuts down more two branches, many left jobless

Nakumatt the once giant retailer in East Africa, has shut down more two branches of Bugoma and Busia in western Kenya leaving many Kenyans jobless and desperate.

A check on the two branches on Monday October 23rd showed the shops remained closed.

One of the supermarket attendees of Bugoma branch said they had been instructed not to report at work this week without any specific reason the previous week.

”We are jobless now, we were told not to come to work therefore we just wait to see the way forward,” she’s says.

She added “we were over twenty  people working in the supermarket and now back home.

Atul Shah the retailer’s Managing Director  couldn’t give any comment on the reason for closure but promised to publish a statement on it this week.

Nakumatt announced plans to close its poorly performing branches in Kenya and Uganda as part of cost cutting measures aimed at saving the retailer sh 1.5 billion annually.

The first store to be closed in May was the Haile Salassie located at the Kenyatta University plaza in Kenya Nairobi.

Nakumatt later closed its stores in Acacia Mall, Kololo, Village mall, Bugolobi and Victoria mall Entebbe Uganda.

Marc du Toit, Head of retail Uganda then said, the supermarket space at the closed malls were to go under redevelopment to add additional value to the shoppers and their shopping experience.

The retailer went on to close other three branches in the following month, Nakumatt Ronald Ngala, Nakumatt Katwe and Haile Selassie Branch in Uganda and Kenya.
