Firebrand spokesperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Ofwono Opondo, who doubles as the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre says the current strike of doctors should be held with suspicion.

Opondo yesterday circulated a picture of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) president Dr.Ebwaru Obuku, visiting opposition politician Kizza Besigye ‘yesterday.’

He captioned the photo with an implication that the doctors could be pushing forward a political agenda behind their strike.

But UMA responded in a tweet and said: “It’s sad when government officials stoop so low; for clarification photo taken in 2016 when a fellow Doctor was under house arrest.”

In response to the photo, Obuku says he is free to meet any politician in the country, having met President Yoweri Museveni before.

“Why doesn’t Ofwono Opondo show my pictures with Museveni,” Obuku remarked when asked for a comment by this newspaper.

The doctors strike has reached its second week as government prepares to replace the striking doctors with new doctors, that it says are ready to work.

Since the strike began, the public health care system is feeling the pinch and could collapse because of lack of staff to attend to patients.
