The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has assigned six doctors to begin work at Mulago National Referral Hospital, in the place of the striking doctors.

The move follows a warning by President Yoweri Museveni that he will sack the doctors if they do not return to work.

The doctors who have begun work are Dr Simon Okongo, Dr Patrick Kyambadde, Dr David Maoba, Dr George Ochaya, Dr James Mwebaze and Dr Hawa Katusiime.

Before the doctors arrived, the Ministry of Health asked all of the doctors to vacate the hospital premises and where it applies all accommodation given to them by government.

Additionally, the ministry is recruiting new doctors to replace the striking ones.

Dr.Jane Aceng, Minister of Health says she requested the president for support to the hospital.

“I notified the president that I needed support. He told the army that the Ministry of Health needed support,” Dr Aceng said.

The health workers strike has entered its second week.
