BUSINESS-All is not well in Uganda’s poultry sector, after major stakeholders disclose that they will no longer engage in poultry farming until a ban on their exports to Kenya, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo is lifted.

Poultry farmers say since the ban, their business has been affected, yet government is reluctant to retaliate by banning poultry products from the same countries.

Since the outbreak of Avian influenza early this year, poultry products from Uganda are no longer accepted through entry points in the three countries. Avian Influenza or Avian flu (H5N1) was first reported on January 2, 2017 after the deaths of birds in Entebbe. Subsequently, Uganda lost over 50,000 domestic birds.

The disease has been neutralized by Government, but the ban continues in place.
