Obed Katurebbe speaking on a local radio station this evening (Friday November 17, 2017) said “one of the reasons Bashir came was to thank the president for that enviable task.”

Katurebbe says the soldiers had been in captivity for almost ten years. They were sent back to Khartoum through Entebbe airport,a process President Museveni facilitated.

The visit by President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir came as Uganda’s relationship with Rwanda deteriorates. Observers felt Museveni was cultivating new allegiances in the region by courting Bashir.

For decades, Uganda was in conflict with Sudan, over its support for Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel leader Joseph Kony. The government says Sudan has abandoned its support for Kony, which led to the restoration of ties between the two countries.
